"Ordeal by Cheque"

Scenario. Crue published this story in a magazine in 1932. It was a two-part story. The unique aspect of this story is that it is told entirely through bank checks (like the ones we still write today to pay our bills). He enclosed a series of checks and asked the readers to guess the storyline based on the information provided on the checks. I have given you the important information off the checks. It is listed on the chart below.
Directions.
1.       Examine the checks listed below very carefully.
2.       Break into a group of no more than three and discuss what the story is about. Have logical reasons for your choices.
3.       When you are done, you need to answer the following questions in a three paragraph response:
·         What is the story about?
·         How would you describe the main characters?
·         What do you think will happen in the remainder of the story?
Your response will eventually be posted to the appropriate thread on my blog. I want you to use correct capitalization, spelling, and complete sentences.

  4. The story is about a child growing up and the things he goes through in his life. The story starts when he is born and basically ends when he is attending college. For example he is making checks at the baby Shoppe for baby things, to the California Toyland Company to buy toys for his son when he gets older, to the City Bicycle Company to buy his son his first bicycle, to buying his son his first car which is a Cadillac and lastly to pay for his sons college at Stanford University. I would describe the father, Lawrence Exeter, Sr. as a nice man and wanting to take as much care of his son as he can. When he needs to buy something that involves his son, he will pay for it. He seems like he is a nice guy. Lawrence Exeter, which is the son, he seems like he is a nice kid that won’t take anything for granted. For example, when his dad buys him things, he accepts that and is grateful for the item that his dad has purchased for him, therefore his dad keeps buying him more and more things. What I think will happen in the remainder of the story is that Lawrence Exeter will grow up and have to live for himself without his dads money and realize that it’s harder than what it was. I also think that Lawrence’s mother will come back home and realize that she should have never left and didn’t realize what she had until they were all gone.

  5. This story is about a father raising a son until he goes to college. The father, Lawrence Exeter, pays for all of his son's needs that were given in the series of checks. Exeter Sr. paid for everything from the time his son was born, to the time he went to college. Therefore, I do not think the son had an actual paying job. I think this story is about a loving father who will give anything for his son. I would describe the father as a rich and caring man. I say this because he has bought everything for his son until he went to college, according to the series of checks. I bet he was a great father. I would describe his son as a very respectful young man. i say this because he must have always had a good behavior because his father bought everything for him. For the remainder of the story, I think that the son will possibly have financial difficulty because his father bought everything for him in the past. His father could have possibly cut him off as far as spending goes and make his son realize that he needs a job. After that, I think the son will start a job so he can pay for his own things and maybe help pay his father back. So, I think the moral of the story would be to get a job at a young age so you can get used to spending your own money in the real world.

This is a story about a man who has a baby and bought cloths for him with the first check, from Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe. Then with the second check he paid the hospital bill when his son was born, the third paid the doctor bill to Dr. David McCoy delivered the baby. With the fourth he got the baby toys from California Toyland Company, the fifth was private schooling for the child. The sixth check was for a bike from City Bicycle Company. The seventh was 5 years later and this was for him to serve in the military. Next one was 6 years after the military check and this one was for a new Cadillac car, which had to have work done on it 4 days later with the ninth check to Welshore Auto Repair Service. Tenth check the last one written was to Stanford University for $339.00. I think in the remainder of this story the father will disown his son because he didn’t go to college, that he dropped out after a week. He will have to start paying for things on his own now. The main character is Lawrence Exeter, Jr. the other main character is Lawrence Exeter, Sr. There is also Lawrence’s mother in this story. I think Mr. & Mrs. Exeter wanted the best for their son but when he dropped out of college they thought he could have done better with his life.

  10. The story from the checks could go like this: Lawrence Sr. and his wife Jenifer, a very well educated house wife he met in college at Stanford, went to get their son’s first crib at Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe. Lawrence Sr. had taken a leave of absence from his law office of Exeter and Associates until Lawrence was delivered. Little Lawrence was due in a week and they still had many last minute details to take care of. Sure enough, Jenifer went into labor three days early and had Lawrence Exeter the Second on September 2, 1903 at Hollywood Hospital. The fabled Doctor David McCoy delivered him. The first seven years of Lawrence’s life were amazing. From toys to bicycles, even his first years of school, Jennifer and Lawrence were always there for him. They sent Lawrence to one of the best preparatory schools in the country, Bilisandre School for boys, where he excelled academically and athletically, as he was a member of the cycling team. When Lawrence turned twelve he showed interest in military ways and asked to transfer to Columbia Military Academy. While there Lawrence learned how to be a man. September 3, 1992, Lawrence turned 18, Lawrence Sr. and Jennifer was so proud of him that they bought him a 1921 Cadillac right off of the showroom floor. He deserved every bit of it, but the day after they bought him the Cadillac, someone rear ended him at a stop light. It was taken to the repair shop the very next day. That fall was Lawrence’s last one at home before he went off to college at Stanford. His parents tried to spend as much time with him as they could before he left. Lawrence will be a very well educated young man, with a life full of success, just like his fathers.

  11. The story sounds like it is about a man named Lawrence Exeter who is going to be a dad at the beginning. Then in September he goes to the hospital and his son is born. As the years progress he provides his son with many things. He buys him toys to play with from the California Toy Company. Then about six years later he enrolls him into the Blisandre School for Boys. After six more years have passed he is enrolled into the Columbia Military Academy. Another six years passed and a car was bought, but within four days the cars needs to be repaired. Then the following thing that was paid for was the enrollment into Stanford University. Lawrence Exeter seems like he cares for his son and wants him to be successful in his life. He enrolls him into me places such as a boy’s school, a military academy, and Stanford University. So it sounds like he either has high expectation of the boy or the boy is very smart and talented. The son seems to have been given most of what he has done in his life. He hasn’t had to work hard to pay for any of his schooling or such. It really doesn’t say much about the mom, so maybe she isn’t a very important character or she has no say in what goes on in the expenses in the family. The last thing we know is that the last check was sent to Stanford University. So assuming that the boy went there and got an education he could grow up and got a job and was able to support himself and do the same for his son. Or maybe he has to help out his parents with finances and pays for the things they need.

  12. This is a story about a man, his wife, and their son. Lawrence Exeter Jr. mother gave birth to him on a rainy day on September 2, 1903 at the Hollywood hospital. He was Delivered by Dr. David McCoy, who was the top doctor to go to at the time, and named after his father. He already had any toy he could ever ask for waiting for him at home. His parents used a check for $148 a week before he was born. Through the checking system that his father used we can unfold the boys story.
The main characters seem to be both rich and spoiled. The boy was lathered in toys by his mother and father before he was even born. To spend $3,885 on a car in 1921 the parents must have been filthy rich. Lawrence Jr. had hundreds spent on him for toys and schooling. He first went to an expensive private school and then to military school. His car needed services four days after he got it, he was most likely irresponsible and wrecked.
In the remainder of the story things are not likely to change. Lawrence Jr. will be spoiled as long as his parents are around. Once his parents are both gone Lawrence Jr. will most likely inherit their money. He may never have to work a day in his life. After having gone to military school though he will probably be a different person and have a different view on the world. Maybe a less selfish one.

This story is about a young couple prepairing to have a baby, and then watching him grow up trying to make the best life possible for him. Throughout the story the couple spends lots of money on their son starting out at the Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe buying supplies for the baby. Next, the baby is here, he was born in Hollywood and doctored by Dr. david McCoy, and just two months later gets some new toys for Christmas at california Toyland Company. The boy was growing up fast and started school at Blisandre School for boys in 1909. Only a year later his father bought him a bike at the City Bicycle Company. He got into some trouble in his teen years and his very own father sent him away to military school for six years. He came back a new man and his father was so proud he bought him a Cadillac, just a few days later he hit a tree and had to get his car fixed at Welshore Auto Repair shop, and then left for college only a month later. I would describe two of the main characters the mother and father as very weathy people that care very deeply about their son and want the best for him. On the other hand the son is not so thankful for the things his parents get him and is very selfish and not responsible for the actions he takes. I think that the boy will finally grow up and raise kids the same way that his father and mother raised him.

  14. The story is about a 30 year-old couple having a baby and it growing up. The parents, Josh and Olivia, go to Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe and buy a crib for $148.00 for their soon-to-be-born son on August 30, 1903. On September 2, 1903 Olivia gave birth to their baby, Nathan at Hollywood Hospital for $100.00. On October 3, 1903 Nathan had to have surgery by Doctor Davis McCoy on his heart for $475.00. On December 19, 1903 Josh and Olivia went to California Toyland Company and bought $83.20 worth of Christmas toys for Nathan on his first Christmas.
Six years later on October 6, 1909 Josh and Olivia signed Nathan up for first grade at the Blisandre School for Boys at a set-back of $1,250.00. Josh taught his son Nathan how to ride a bike on April 18, 1910 that he bought from City Bicycle Company for $52.50. Josh decides to later go in to the military at the Columbia Military Academy on August 26, 1915 for a cost of $2,150.00. Then six years later on September 3, 1921 Olivia goes to Hollywood Cadillac Company to buy her son a $3,885.00 car to go to college in. Then four days later on September 7, 1921 Nathan wrecked the car into a tree and did $288.76 worth of damage to be fixed at Welshore Auto Repair Service. Nathan went to Stanford University on October 15, 1921 to buy college books at a price of $339.00.
Josh is a very hardworking, supportive, encouraging father and husband. Olivia is very kind, strong, and a ‘wanting to do everything perfectly’ mom. Nathan is a very smart student and always tries his hardest at sports and everything he does. In the remainder of the story, I think that Josh will graduate college with an engineering degree and get married to the perfect woman and have two daughters. I also think that life will be very stressful with two daughters and rely on Josh and Olivia for help after they retire and are able to relax.

  15. On August 30, 1903 Lawrence Exeter went to the Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe to buy items for his soon to come child. On September 2, 1903 he had his child and named him Lawrence Exeter Jr. Then one month one day later he went to the doctor because a member of his family had gotten sick. The sickness had to of been pretty bad since the bill was $475. In the time period this is in $475 was a lot of money for someone to be spending on a hospital bill or just in total. Lawrence Exeter Sr. went to the California Toyland Company on December 19,1903 to buy toys for his son for Christmas. The bill was $83.20 so he probably bought a lot of toys or he just bought a few expensive toys. When his son was six years old he sent him to the Blisandre School for Boys. Lawrence then went to City Bicycle Company on April 18, 1910 to buy his son a bike. When Lawrence Exeter Jr. was almost 12 he was sent to the Columbia Military Academy. One day after Lawrence Exeter Jr. turned 18 he is out of the Military Academy and Lawrence Exeter Sr. bought his son a Cadillac from the Hollywood Cadillac Company. Then on September 7, 1921 (4 days after he got the Cadillac) the car had to be taken to the Welshore Auto Repair Service for a big repair. On October 15, 1921 Lawrence Exeter Sr. bought his sons Stanford University bill for his son to go through more schooling. In the remainder of the story the son will probably go through with his school and get his degree. I would also say that the father will buy whatever the child wants since in this whole story it seems that Lawrence Exeter Sr. is just spoiling his child.

This story is about a young man named brad and woman named Marsha, A lovely couple in their 30’s. Two days ago, Marsha had a little baby boy named Carson on September 2nd 1903. Brad and Marsha were very prepared for this baby boy. For instance they bought a crib for baby Carson on august 30th 1903 for $148 at the choice Yanish Baby Shoppe for 30% off! After they brought the baby home they got a bill in the mail from Hollywood Hospital for $100. But that is no problem for them because Brad and Marsha are very wealthy people. Brad is a Anesthesiologist, and Marsha is a Nurse. Brad is a people person, he has always loved being around people. Marsha is the same way, very sociable. On October 2nd, Brad and Marsha got a call from Dr. David McCoy saying that baby Carson needs surgery on his heart because it was beating irregularly when he was born and the doctor didn’t want it to be a problem for him later in life. So on September 3rd 1903. Carson had his surgery that cost $475.Now it is Baby Carson’s first Christmas!! On December 19th, Brad went to the California toy company and bought Carson an electric hummer that he could drive all around for $82.20. Christmas day, Carson was the happiest little baby there ever was.
6 years later October 6th 1909, Carson was starting school at Blisandre School for boys. With a tuition of$1,250.00! In the April, Marsha went down to the City Bicycle Company to buy carson a bike so that Brad can teach him how to ride. They only live a mile away from the school, so Carson can just ride his new red bike he got for $52.50. 5 years later in august, Carson decided to go into the Columbia military academy for $2, 1500.00. His mom was not so happy, but she was supportive and his dad was proud. Since he was going into the Military, Brad and Marsh thought that Carson should have a car. So on September 3rd 1821, mom and dad bought him a Cadillac from the Hollywood Cadillac Company for $3,885.00.
On September 7th 1921, 4 days after her got his car; Carson wrecked it into a tree. Brad and Marsha were furious at him. They made him pay for the repairs at Welshore Auto Repair Service for $288.76. Carson was not too happy about it, but it was his own fault. After that all calmed down, on October 15th 1921, he got a scholarship to Stanford for $339.00. It was a great day, but he already decided he was going to serve his country and he turned them down.

  17. I think in the Ordeal by Cheque it tells of a women having a son and how the son grows up.
The story starts when Chris Exeter purchases clothes for her baby at Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe for $148.00. A couple of days later Chris went to Hollywood Hospital and there Lawrence Exeter, Jr was born. A few months later Lawrence went to Dr. David McCoyss doctors office to get his new born shots and his first check up. In December Lawrence, Sr went to California Toyland Company to buy his little baby boy some toys for Christmas. The boy seemed to grow like a weed, before Chris and Lawrence, Sr knew it Lawrence, Jr was ready to start his first day of school at Blisandre School for Boys. Lawrence caught on very quickly to thing and before they knew it he had already got his first bicycle from City Bicycle Company and was ridding it like a pro. A few years had gone by and Lawrence was about to turn 12 years old. It seemed that he always was getting in trouble and mixed up with the wrong people, so a few days before Lawrences 12th birthday his parents decided that it might be best if he went to school at Columbia Military Academy. For Lawrence, Jr 18th birthday Lawrence, Sr bought him a Cadillac from Hollywood Cadillac Company. Four days later Lawrence, Jr wrecked his car into a pole in the middle of an empty parking. Later that year in October Lawrence, Jr started school at Stanford University.

Lawrence Exeter, a man from a very wealthy family, went to a grocery store once and met a beautiful, blond girl with plump lips and a beautiful smile. They were so much in love and were married a year from the day they met. On August 30, 1903 they went to the Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe and bought a bed and a lot of clothing for their baby on the way. September 2nd, Mrs. Exeter thought her water broke but she was too eager, for it was just a bad stomach cramp. Mr. Exeter, out of courtesy paid the Hollywood Hospital for helping his wife anyways. October 3rd, the greatest day of Mr. and Mrs. Exeter’s lives, Lawrence Exeter, Jr. was born and they wrote a check to the doctor who had helped with the miracle of the life of their beautiful son. Later that year, the Exeter’s bought Christmas gifts for Lawrence, Jr. They bought him a little fire truck made of wood and a train set too. It wasn’t until 1909 when Lawrence, Sr. wrote his next check for an all boys private school. It was really expensive but the Exeter’s could afford it. The next year, they thought it was time for Jr. to learn how to ride a bike so they purchased one from the City Bicycle Company. When the boy was almost 12 years of age they sent him to a military academy and paid over $2,000 for him to go there and learn new life skills. At age 18, Lawrence Jr. was granted with another of life’s privileges… driving. He wasn’t going to avoid the wealthier side of things here either. His father purchased his son a Cadillac. Perhaps Jr. was too eager because four days after the purchase he wrecked the car because he slammed into a tree while pulling out of the driveway of their mansion. About a month later, Mr. Exeter paid a payment to Stanford University. Lawrence Exeter, Jr. would have the privilege to go to one of the best universities in the country. Mr. Exeter seems like a very nice man and very loving and caring of his son, whom he named after himself. He also cares enough to use his wealth to his advantage in order to make his son’s life more comfortable. Lawrence, Jr. seems to be accepting of his father’s treatment and is probably very nice too but he is spoiled in a great deal of things in life. I predict that Lawrence, Jr. will meet a girl at Stanford and have a son with her after they are wed and he will continue the cycle by naming him Lawrence Exeter and he will be wealthy and be able to pay for and spoil his son too.

  19. I think this system of cheques creates a story about Lawrence Exeter and his wife, Susan, having a child and the life this child lives. The story starts out by a purchase by Lawrence Sr. at a baby store on August 30.He was preparing for the birth of his baby. About 2 days later there is a trip to the hospital and a baby boy, Lawrence Exeter Jr., is born. In October the boy gets sick so he is taken to Dr. David McCoy. He had the flu. Then Christmas rolls around and the Lawrence Jr. gets plenty of toys. When the boy is six he starts school in October. He goes to an all boy school. When he was almost 7, Lawrence Jr. liked to ride his bike, so his family purchased him a brand new bike from the City Bicycle Company. When the boy was almost 12 he begins to turn into trouble. His parents make the hard choice to put him into military school to make him a better child and to learn to behave. Lawrence Jr. soon starts to behave and his parents choose to reward him. They purchase him a Cadillac. This cadillac was Lawrence Jr.’s baby so when it breaks down he has a break down. His parents tell him that they called a repair shop. The repair man said the car can be fixed. So the car gets fixed for $288.76. Soon Lawrence Jr. goes away to college. He goes to Stanford University.

  20. I think this story is about a child growing up. He was born in 1903. The first two checks that Lawrence Exeter wrote had to do with a baby store and a hospital. The third was to a doctor and his name changed to “Sr.” when he signed the check. These two things can give the assumption that a child was born. The child has a pretty set life as seeing what his father writes checks to. The reader can see that the child attends schools for boys rather than public school. Also that he went to a Military Academy in his teens, because he attended Stanford University for college. The reader can also infer the boy/family drove a Cadillac and had some repairs. The three main characters are the mother, the father (Lawrence Exeter, Sr.) and their son, Lawrence Exeter. You cannot tell from the story what they are like exactly but you can make some guesses. For example, the mother does not sign any checks. From this you can gather that she does not have a say in the boy’s life when it comes to decisions such as schooling, cars etc. The father on the other hand seems very strict. He sent the child to a school for boys and a military academy. The child seems to go along with what the father says. For example you only see the auto repair check as being the only alarming thing. I think in the remainder of the story some type of mishap will occur and the family will be torn apart.

In August Lawrence Exter was getting prepared for a new little life , a baby that is! He went with his beautiful wife to Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe to buy a baby crip, cothing, and many other things to prepare them for a baby! On September 2nd his wife had thought she went into labor! Mr. Exeter immediately rushed her to the hospital, to only then find out it was a false alarm and everything was okay! Mr. Exeter still had to pay the hospital for this trip though! Then later on, about a month later, Mrs. Exeter called her husband in a panic saying the words “IT’S TIME!!” So once again her husband rushed her to the hospital, later on this day was the greatest moment of his life. He had a baby boy which they decided to name after him! So after he paid the doctor and thanked him many times they, moved on with their new lives! For Christmas the boy’s parents buy him lots of football and other sports stuff. In October tthey send him to a private school called Bisandre School for Boys and decided that since they lived close enough to the school the boy could ride a bike there every day, so his parents bought him! Later on, August 26th his parents sent him to the Columbia Military Academy. Since he had worked so hard Mr. Exeter decided it was time for him to get a car! Which then had broken down and needed repaired. Shortly after he left for college at Stanford university! The main characters are a father, mother ,and a son. The father and mother have a little baby boy that they take care of and raise till he goes off to college on his own. I think in the remainder of the story the boy goes to college and begins to make a life for himself.

  22. Mr. Lawrence Exeter's wife was about to have a baby so he decided to buy lots of baby stuff the baby will need at Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe. They bought the baby a crib, a blanky, blue and pink paint for his/her room and lots of baby clothes. He then took his wife to Hollywood Hospital to figure out if the baby was a boy or a girl. Then Lawrence junior was born and Lawrence senior had to pay Dr. David McCoy for his hard work. Lawrence Jr. wanted some toys so his dad went to California Toyland Company and bought him a toy train, some toy planes and other baby toys. After a few years Junior was ready to start school, and was signed up at the Blisandre School for Boys. Mrs. Exeter wanted to go mountain biking so Lawrence went and bought the whole family mountain bikes! Then they went a rode up to the top of the mountain by their house. Junior was sent to the Columbian Military Academy after he violently punched grandpa Exeter in the face after he insulted his girlfriend. Mr. Exeter bought his son a car after he graduated from military school at the top of his class with straight A’s. The car was then rolled multiple times down a steep hill where it then smashed into a large tree and a pigeon pooped on it. After a lot of begging Mr. Exeter Sr. paid for his son to attend Stanford University.

  23. Lawrence Exeter and his wife, Dana were going to have a baby boy soon. On August 30, 1909 Lawrence bought 148$ worth of baby things at Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe. A few days later his wife went to Hollywood Hospital for a checkup. A month later, Dana gave birth to a baby boy. The doctor who delivered his baby was Dr. David McCoy. They named their new baby boy after his Father, Lawrence Exeter. Now Mr. Exeter signs as Lawrence Exeter, Sr. When Lawrence Jr. was 4 months old his father bought him toys at the California Toyland Company. At age six Lawrence started school at Blisandre School for Boys. When he when he seven, he got a bike for the end of his first year of school. When Lawrence Jr. was twelve years old, his parents signed him up for the Columbia Military School. Right before Lawrence’s eighteenth birthday, his parents bought him a car from the Hollywood Cadillac Company. Four days later Lawrence jr. wrecked his brand new car. He was a troubling kid, but his parents were going to make sure he would be successful. On October 15, 1921 his parents paid the first of his college dues.
There are two main characters and a minor character. The minor character is Lawrence Sr.’s wife and Lawrence Jr.’s Mom. The two main characters are Lawrence Exeter Sr. and his son Lawrence Exeter Jr. As Lawrence Jr. grew up he was a troubling child and worried his parents. (Why they sent him to military school) His Father is a caring father and intends to pay for anything to make his son successful.
There are many things that could happen in the rest of the story. I think Jr. will get married later in the story and continue his life paying for things on his own.

  24. This story is about a family (wife and husband) having their first child. The first three entries were the family’s preparation for the baby. The entries then corresponded with the rest of the events in the baby boy’s life. Like going to school, getting a bicycle, and then even a car. The final entry in the checkbook was for college, so the boy had finally grown up.
I would describe Lawrence Exeter, Sr. as a very generous, nice, thoughtful man. As shown by all the things he paid for over the years for the boy. I would describe the mother also as a genuine person who just wants the best for her son. I would describe the boy (Lawrence Exeter, Jr.) as a grateful, caring man like his father but I do not believe he was always that way. I think that as a boy, he was a troublemaker. That’s why his parents sent him to the military school, but over time he came to be a good person.
I think that in the remainder of the story things will continue in the direction they’re going. I think that Lawrence Exeter, Jr. will continue through college and graduate. He might even get a job or get married. Possibly even have kids in time. So in part two, I think that the focus will be shifted solely to Lawrence Exeter, Jr.

  25. This story is about a boy being born, and growing up. The different checks represent different aspects of his life, most of which are important in the life of a child. These checks lead you to believe that on August 30, 1903 his parents were shopping for their baby on the way. The second check represents the day he was born, September 2, 1903. The third check represents a doctor’s appointment on October 3, 1903. The fourth check was written on December 19, 1903, which might have been a last minute Christmas shopping trip. The fifth check was written to enroll him in the Blisandre School for Boys, on October 6, 1909. In April, he received his first bicycle from the City Bicycle Company. On August 26, 1915, a check was written for him to go to the Columbia Military Academy. Six years later, he bought his first car, a Cadillac. In September, he had to have some repairs to his car. On October 15, 1921 he enrolled at Stanford University.

From the checks written in this story, you can gather that Lawrence Exeter Sr. paid for most of his expenses from his childhood, through his teenage years, and his college tuition. Lawrence Exeter Jr. did not have a job, and didn’t seem to have to work too hard for what he was given. I think with this, he will be very appreciative of all the things he was given as a child that he will now have to pay himself. I think he will grow up, move out of the house and have to fend for himself. I think he will struggle to do so at times, but eventually he will stabilize himself, and have a successful life and career.

  26. My group members and I have decided that Lawrence Exeter is a man whose wife is going to have a baby. They are preparing for the child to come by furnishing a bedroom with pieces of furniture from Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe. Lawrence Exeter’s wife had a check up of the baby at Hollywood Hospital on September 2, 1903, and then a month and a day later the child was delivered by Dr. David McCoy. It was a boy. In two months the boy was old enough to be entertained by toys bought by Lawrence Exeter, Sr. from California Toyland Company. When the boy was six years old he attended Blisandre School for Boys. He was seven when his father bought him his first bike from City Bicycle Company. Before going to college at Stanford University in October, 1921, Lawrence Execter, Sr.’s son attended Columbia Military Academy in August of his 12th year. He received his first car in September right before turning 18, but he wrecked it four days later. The car was repaired at Welshore Auto Repair Service. I think that Lawrence Exeter, Sr. and his wife are very wealthy and have spoiled Lawrence Exeter, Jr. This doesn’t mean that he is a bad person, just that he may be too used to getting everything he wants. Throughout the rest of the story the Exeters will continue to spend more money and I think that Lawrence Exeter, Jr. will get married and that either they will get a divorce, Lawrence Exeter, Sr. will die, or both things will happen!

  27. The story is about a man named Lawrence Exeter Sr. having his first son come into the world and everything he buys for his son. Sr. goes to a baby store and gets prepared for the new addition to his family. September 2, 1903 a baby boy cam into Sr.’s world his name took after his father Lawrence Exeter.
The little boy was not in the world for a month before he was sick and had to go to his first doctor appointment. Lawrence Exeter Sr. went to the California Toyland Company to buy his son toys for his first Christmas. Since his son is still only a couple months old so there is not much to get him that is very expensive for Christmas, but Sr. still has a lot of money to spend in the future Christmases.
At the age of 7 Lawrence Exeter Jr. get’s put into Blisandre School for Boys which will be a “fun” experience for the young boy. Lawrence Exeter Jr. gets to learn how to ride his first bicycle at the age of 8.
When Lawrence Exeter Jr. turns 17 he gets his first car and a very nice one at that. Lawrence Exeter Sr. bought his son a Cadillac for his first car. The car must not have been brand new because they had to take into an auto repair shop 4 days after they bought it. Lawrence Exeter Jr. heads off to Stanford University on October 15, 1921, where he will be faced with many challenges and struggles to further his knowledge.

  28. Part One
The story is about a child’s life from about two months before he was born to the day his dad paid for college at Stanford University. Lawrence Exeter went to the Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe on August 30, 1903 to buy stuff for his new baby on the way. On September 2nd his son was born and he paid the hospital bill. It took him and his wife a month to decide on a name for the baby. And on October 3, they went in for their first check up on the baby and decided to name him Lawrence Exeter, Jr. A few days later, they went to buy him toys. In October, 1909, Lawrence Jr started school at Bilsandre School for boys. A year later, they bought him his first bike. In 1915, when Lawrence Jr was 12, he started school at a military academy. When Lawrence turned 18, his dad took him to Hollywood Cadillac Company to buy him his first car, a few days later; he got in his first wreck. In October of 1921, Lawrence Sr paid for his son’s college at Stanford University. I think that Lawrence Jr’s parents liked paying for everything that he needed and didn’t give him much discipline, and after a while they had to send him to military school. I think that at the end of the story, Lawrence is going to get married and he will to start paying for things himself.

  29. Once I saw the first check I knew that the story had to do with a baby. The different checks have to deal with the child’s life and all he accomplished. The first check shows that the parents got items for the baby’s arrival. The second check which was written on September 2nd, 1903 to the Hollywood Hospital shows that the baby was born. A month later the new born had his one month old check up and got the shots he needed. About two months later they did some shopping at a Toyland company for some toys and other items for their son. Six years later on October 6, 1909 they enrolled their son into Blisandre School for boys. A year later they bought their son a bike from the City Bicycle Company. Five years later Lawrence Exeter Sr. signed up Laurence Exeter Jr. for the Columbia Military Academy because he was a problem child that needed strict direction. After Lawrence got out of the military academy his dad bought him a Cadillac for a job well done in his military schooling. Once Lawrence got his car, he soon wrecked it. After he wrecked his car, his father made him go to Stanford University because he didn’t think he was using all of him potential to learn.
I think that Lawrence Sr. has given Lawrence Jr. a good start to his life because he was in a school for boys growing up, and he paid for him to go to Stanford University to get a good education. Lawrence Jr. Blows off his intelligence and does not really care about his education. Once he wrecked his car, his dad made him go back to school for his education.
I think that Lawrence Jr. will start paying for his own stuff and appreciate all that his father did for him. He knows that he has the ability to go far in life. I also think that Lawrence Jr. will get a job and start acting more like an adult.

  30. The story is about the life of a father and son whose characters are tested during unfortunate events. Lawrence Exeter was a very tall, smart man. He was the president of Stanford and he was very intimidating to the students. He was married and his wife was expecting a child. Later on, he names him Lawrence Exeter, Jr, however, he discovers that he had a rare disease. While under a great amount of stress, he gets a call from the doctor saying the disease vanished over night. As the boy grew up, Lawrence Exeter, Sr spoils him by buying him bikes, new clothes, toys, and eventually a Cadillac. Lawrence, Jr decided he wants to go to the military before going to college. His dad paid for it and he went for two years. Unfortunately, he wrecked his car during the middle of his first year. His dad paid for the repairs, however, during this time, he lost a lot of his so called “friends.” After his time in the military was over, he went to college at Stanford to study child related diseases.
Since Lawrence, Sr almost lost his son; he spoils him throughout his life by buying him stuff and paying his expenses. Lawrence, Jr is a very good kid, however, he takes things for granted. He doesn’t have any real friends that like him the way he is, only for his possessions. In the rest of the story, he finds a cure to the disease that he had when he was a kid.

  32. On August 30, 1903 Lawrence Exeter was about to have a baby boy and bought baby supplies at Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe. On September 2, 1903 Lawrence went to the Hollywood Hospital with his expecting wife and he paied the hospital then, on the same day Lawrence’s wife delivered a baby boy and Lawrence Sr. paid Dr. David McCoy for the delivery. 33. A man named Lawrence Exeter and his wife are expecting a child very, very soon. So, he goes to Choice Vanish Baby Shoppe on August 30th, 1903(four days before the due date) to get the things they can think of that they will need for the baby for now. On September 2nd of the same year, Lawrence Exeter is born at the Hollywood Hospital (him being born now makes the father Lawrence Exeter, Sr). The delivery of the baby had been made by Dr. David McCoy. After they got the baby home to take care of on their own, Lawrence Exeter, Sr went to California Toyland Company to go buy some toys for his newborn child. Six years later, they send their little boy to kindergarten at the Bilsandre School for Boys. His parents want to teach him how to ride a bike, so they go to the City Bicycle Company to buy him his first bicycle. On August 26th, 1915 Lawrence, Sr went to the Columbia Military Academy. Six years goes by and Lawrence is on his way home from the Military Academy and he makes a stop at the Hollywood Cadillac Company to buy a car. Four days later he ended up in the Welshore Auto Repair Service because he crashed his car on his way home from the grocery store, and it takes a week to get the car repaired. So, on October 15th, the day after he gets his car back, he drives himself to the college of Stanford University.

  34. This story is about a little boy’s childhood. It all started when Lawrence Exeter was born in Hollywood Hospital in 1903. A beautiful blonde hair blue eyed boy was added to the family of Darla and Lawrence Exeter, Sr. Lawrence also known as Rency grew up in a small town in California in a huge mansion. His dad works at a business firm in California, he is always in the office and is barely home. Rency’s mom worked at a day care center and worked around the house. She would never say no to anyone and people used that to their advantage. Rency was the perfect child in everyone’s eyes he always did what he was told, got good grades, popular, and never got in trouble. When Rency was 7 he got his first bicycle and since then he always wanted to be a professional NASCAR driver, and started to change the way he acted. It was after he attended Bilsandre School for boys when everything went bad. Rency made friends with the wrong kids and started bullying other kids and getting into fights. He would meet with his friends and ride their bicycles and make fun of other kids in their neighborhood. Rency’s parents didn’t know what to do so they decided to send him to Columbia military academy. That didn’t help at all because he ended up getting involved in drugs and started smoking. But his parents did not know so once he graduated high school they bought him a new Cadillac for his 16th birthday. Rency went to a party one night and was driving under the influence and ended up wrecking into a tree. The next morning he told his parents that someone rear ended him and bumped him into the guardrail. So they believed him and ended up repairing his car at Welshore Auto Repair. So once he got his car back he was headed off to attend college at Stanford University where he changed his life around or did he?

  35. In this story, Lawrence Exeter and his wife had a son. Before the baby was born, they went to the Choice Yanish Baby Shoppe to buy clothes and other things for the baby. They went to the Hollywood Hospital for a checkup a month before the baby was due. On October 3,1903, Dr. David McCoy delivered their son, Lawrence Exeter Jr. at California Toyland Company. When Lawrence Jr. turned six years old, he started private school at Blisande School for boys. On April 18, 1910, his parents bought him a new bike at City Bicycle Company. Due to disciplinary issues, Lawrence Jr. was sent to Columbia Military Academy when he was 11 years old. His parents bought him his first car at the age of 17. Four days later, Lawrence Jr. he wrecks his car and his father pays for the repairs. Lawrence Jr. goes to college at the age of 18, on October 15,1921 at Stanford University.
The main characters in the story are Mr. Lawrence Exeter, this wife, and Lawrence Exeter Jr. Lawrence Exeter Jr. is a kid that is irresponsible. He wrecks his car and is sent to military school by his parents. His parents were wealthy and they bought him everything he wanted. They bought him a Cadillac for his first car and paid for military school, private school, and Stanford University. His parents were the kind that would always pay for his expenses. Lawrence Jr. seems like the kind that would not have a job because he has his parents to pay for everything for him.
In the remainder of the story, I think that Lawrence Jr. will grow up and learn to do things on his own. He will get married and have a family. He will become rich like his father and have a good life.

  36. The story behind the checks is about a young man. His name is Lawrence Exeter. His wife is pregnant and the baby is expected on September 5, 1903. Mr. Exeter goes baby shopping on August 30, 1903. There he receives a message saying the delivery of his baby may be early. It turns out Mr. Exeter’s wife; Sharon has the baby September 2, 1903. They name the boy Lawrence Exeter the 2nd. Lawrence is taken to a doctor one month later where he receives medical attention. The boy goes through life receiving Christmas presents, learning how to ride a bike and enrolling as a student at a military academy. When Lawrence is 18, his dad buys him his first car, a 1921 Cadillac at an outstanding $3,885. Lawrence goes on with his life and gets unexpected problems like not getting his new car to work just a month before he goes to college at Stanford University. There are three main characters, Lawrence Exeter Senior, Lawrence Exeter, and Sharon Exeter.

    - Lawrence Exeter Senior. – 6’6”, bald, a business man and prior war veteran. Weighs in at 215 lbs. and has a deep voice. He is a serious man that sticks to his words.
    - Lawrence Exeter – A young student enrolled in a military academy, works hard, short, skinny, 125 lbs, 5’6”, receding hair line like his father.
    - Sharon Exeter – 5’7”, calm, long blond hair, blue green eyes, a strong passionate person.

Later in the Story – I believe later in the story that Mr. Lawrence Exeter will graduate from college and goes on to become a mechanical engineer in Manhattan, NY. There he raises a large family of three who he loves very much and would do anything in the world for them.

  37. Lawrence Exeter had a son son named Lawrence Exeter Jr. In August of 1903 Mr Exeter went to get baby furniture for his son. Then in September Mr. Exter’s wife went into labor and his son was born. A month later the baby went to his first check up with the doctor. The baby then enede up having a very happy childhood because his father bought him plenty of toys. When the boy was six years old Mr Exeter being the wealthy educated man he was sent him to a private school for the best education. This was the time when the son started to grow and develope a idea of what he wanted to do with his life. The boy being a proud nationalist decided he wanted to be a man of action on the military.after the boy was finished with millitary school his father bought him a used cadillac to pursue his educational pursuits. Confused about his educational pursuits Lawrence Jr. asked his mother where he should go for college. She was very biased in the matter because both her and Mr. Exeter went to Stanford University. Lawrence was very concerned about making a college choice and he didn’t want to break his mother’s kind heart so he decided Stanford would suit his needs. Lawrence decided that he wanted to be a wealthy citizen so he decided to become a lawyer. During his studies at Stanford he fell in love with a girl named Helen, and after they graduated they got married and opened up their own law firm.

  38. The air was particularly humid for a night in Hollywood; and as Mr. Exeter appeared from the shadows of Hughland and Selma Avenue he started to sprint towards his Mitchell automobile. He raced to the hospital and arrived just before his wife started to actually have the newborn. He then proceeded to the side of his wife and talked her through it, comforting her as the time went on. Not even a full week ago had the Exeters finished the wardrobe of Lawrence Exeter Jr. they dug through all the clothes in the store trying to agree on something together. They had also bought clothes for the baby girl they had expected; however when Lawrence was born they had to return everything and exchanged for the proper male clothing. A month after Lawrence was born his mother and father took him to see their family doctor, Dr. David McCoy. A friendly man who got all the business from the Exeters and many other devoted townsfolk. He gave Lawrence a physical and he passed with flying colors and was cleared for the next stage of his life. For his first Christmas his presents consisted of toys which were purchased from the California toy land co.Being not even a year old he loved them. As time went on he developed into a fine young man and was sent to a private school and excelled for a reward they bought him a bicycle and payed for his schooling at military school. He did so well there they bought him a Cadillac restored it and he drove to Stanford. He of course succeeded and got out Scott free . He loved life and his wife and children for the rest of his days.

They saw a add with a huge crib at yanish baby shops and headed right there too look at it. It was perfect for what the needed and only 148 dollars. Three nights later Clair’s water broke and Bill rushed her to Hollywood hospital. At 9:15 pm on September 2 ,1903 Bill and Clair had a 9lb 2 oz baby boy. The hospital only charges a 100 dollar down payment. Bill and Clair named the baby Johnny. Everyone called him little Johnny. The doctors released them a day later but about three weeks later Johnny started throwing up so they brought him to too Doctor David McCoy’s on October 3. The doctor said that Johnny’s stomach muscle closed and no food could get down there. So they had a surgery the same day. Everything went good and Johnny went home the next day. This surgery cost about 475 dollars without insurance. Christmas was coming soon so bill and Clair started saving for a present for Johnny. They saved 82 dollars for a present for Johnny. With that money they went to California toy land company and bought a push able hummer SUV. Johnny love riding in it. Six years later it was Johnny’s first day of 1st grade at the Blisandre School of boys. His parents had to pay 1250 dollars a year for him to go there. He enjoyed every day there with all his new friends. Johnny really wanted how to learn how to ride a bike so he told his parents and his parents took him to city Bicycle Company to teach him how to ride. Five years later Johnny’s dad bought a new car for him since he was going to Stanford for collage. But five days after he got it he hit a tree. So he took it to welshore auto repair service, to fix the headlight. Johnny ordered his collage books two weeks before he started. Johnny ended up getting his masters in CSI.

The checks all represent a very important time in his childs life. The story is about a man that gets married and has a child. The first and second chaecks are for the hospital bill and the baby essentials. The third check is for the baby’s first visit to the doctor for shots and an exam. Mr. Exeter and his wife found out the their child was very sick and were forced to buy very expensive medience. The fouth check was for the child’s very first christmas. The parents had bought toys from California Toyland Company. The fifth check is for his first school The Blisandre School for Boys. It was a very expensive school but it should shape his future. Then six months later the sixth check is signed for a new bicycle from City Bicycle Company. More than 5 years later the boy is signed up and sent off to the military academy in Columbia. The eighth check is for the Hollywood Cadillac Company he got a brand new cadillac! The ninth check was only 4 days later because he had already crashed his new car. The tenth check was to the Stanford University at which Lawrence Exeter, Jr. goes to for his college schooling.
The father as far as I can tell is very wealthy and generous to his son. Although the checks only show the main points in his life the son was very well taken care of. I think in the remainder of the story the child will end up very rich and then start taking care of his father and start a life.

“ Ordeal by Cheque “ Part II
After the first part in Ordeal by Cheque a lot has happened, now Sr. Lawrence Exeter payed Miss Daisey Windsor $25000 to buy him a whole new wordrob and everything he needed for his cruise trip. After Sr. payed for the trip he set off with his son Jr. for a two week get away, to clear their head and finish planning for Jr. wedding. After they returned from their relaxing trip they went to work on planning the big day. Sr. wanted to pay for everything and make their big wedding day perfect. They started out by getting flowers, then the most beautiful place they could find Riviera Heights. Later they got a Renaissance Decorator to decorate and match their dreams a perfect wedding. Next stop was the ring, and he couldn’t have picked a more perfect ring, after paying for the steam ship to get them to the wedding, Sr. just wrote Jr. a check for $200,000 to pay for the rest of the wedding because Sr. was worn out. Jr. got straight to work buying the rest of the things for the perfect, beautiful wedding. All these things included buying the dress, the hotel room, more flowers, getting the ring polished, and of course buying lingerie for their special night. When he suddenly found out the his soon to be wife was cheating on him with his best friend. Jr. was very upset and angry, but was not letting her get away with this so he got a lawyer to flight for his money and things. He felt like his life was falling apart and his wonderful, loving father was having a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. Sr. ended up being okay but was left broke and broken hearted.
